Valdez was ranked the No. 14 prospect in the Mets system according to MLB Pipeline.  The 19-year-old outfielder was the No. 29 international prospect during the 2018 signing period.  He signed a deal that landed him $1.45 million with the Mets.

The Dominican Republic native will bring raw power to the Red Sox system.  Keith Law ranked him the No. 13 prospect in the Mets system writing,  “His ultimate value will come down to his plus-plus raw power and whether he hits enough to get to it in games.”

Baseball America has compared Valdez to Indians slugger Franmil Reyes and MLB Pipeline has compared him to former White Sox outfielder Jermaine Dye.  Baseball America also wrote, “During one notable live batting practice session at instructional league, the right-handed-hitting Valdez flexed his plus-plus raw power by driving a pitch about 450 feet down the left-field line.  Otherwise, the speed of instructional league play was too fast for Valdez, who was one of the younger players in camp.  He doesn’t chase out of the zone as much as other hitters his age but struggled to wait on his pitch and do damage.”

Valdez hit .274/.367/.448 with six homers, 16 doubles and three triples combined between 57 games in the Dominican Summer League and three games in the Gulf Coast League in 2019.  The young outfielder looks to have good upside with his power potential.

He did not play in 2020 due to the minor-league season being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Valdez did participate in the Mets' fall instructional league.  He will be under team control through 2022 and eligible for the Rule 5 draft if he is not added to the Red Sox 40-man roster by November of 2022.

The Red Sox now have acquired three players back for Benintendi in Valdez, pitching prospect Josh Winckowski and Franchy Cordero.  Winckowski has been pitching well for Double-A Portland.  He is is 2-0 with a 1.33 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in five starts.
