Boston Red Sox: Alex Verdugo Wants to Pitch in the Big Leagues

Alex Verdugo has settled in nicely with the Boston Red Sox since being part of the Mookie Betts trade last season. Chief Baseball Officer, Chaim Bloom prioritized Verdugo as the centerpiece of the Betts deal. In doing so, Boston was getting a high-energy, up-and-coming clutch hitter that has taken the city over with the way he plays the game.

Verdugo has provided numerous heroics since joining the organization and has had a few memorable moments this season. The 24-year-old outfielder had the game winning diving catch in Minnesota earlier this season, he had a walk off hit against the Blue Jays at Fenway Park and demolished baseballs into the seats at Yankee Stadium.

“It’s been the way I’ve been ever since I started playing baseball,” said Verdugo over the weekend in Kansas City. “It’s just that I love the game. I’ve always competed. I’ve always wanted to do my best. And I think with that, I’ve always celebrated the success. With the failure, I’ve just kind of always worn my emotions on my sleeve. You’ve got to learn how to tame it and control some of those angry outbursts."

Besides everything Verdugo does at the plate and in the field, he also wants to help from the mound. The baseball world has seen what Shohei Ohtani has done for the Angels both on the mound and at the plate. Verdugo would like to show the Red Sox that he can also be a viable two-way player in baseball.

Verdugo was on The Chris Rose Rotation podcast and talked about wanting to pitch for the Red Sox.

“I definitely could of, I feel like I can pitch…those dreams, man that would be like two-three years away. I would have to build up our strength again, I’d have to do you know a lot of throwing program and try to get the arm going again,” said Verdugo to Chris Rose.

Verdugo has made it clear in the past about his desire to one day pitch in the big leagues. As Verdugo was coming out of high school back in 2014, he was a highly regarding pitcher. Once Verdugo was drafted by the Dodgers, he went from being a two-way high player to an outfielder. Dodgers scouting supervisor Brian Stephenson felt that Verdugo had the upside to become a No. 3 starter in the league.

“He wasn’t just a stuff guy,” said Stephenson to The Athletic back in March of 2020. “(He) could really pitch. Good delivery. Threw strikes.”

Rose asked whether Verdugo could strike a player out right now, the energetic outfielder replied, “I want to say yes, it depend, I mean I can strike out Julio (J.D. Martinez). He (Martinez) says no chance obviously, but I told him, ‘Hey you don’t know about this little high spin rate four seam up in the zone bud.”

Bloom has acknowledged Verdugo’s passion for pitching in the past, “I generally don’t like to take options off the table.”

Verdugo wants to pitch and will in a few years begin a throwing program to get him ready for a potential chance on the mound.
