Boston Red Sox: Christian Arroyo Provided a Dramatic Home Run, Cements Himself at Second Base

Last summer when the Red Sox claimed Christian Arroyo off waivers it came with little fanfare. Arroyo was once a top promising prospect in baseball initially drafted by the Giants. He was traded to the Rays as part of the Evan Longoria trade, then was traded to the Indians where he failed to make an impact.

Chaim Bloom who was familiar with Arroyo from their time with Tampa Bay. When the Indians designated Arroyo for assignment last August, Bloom quickly claimed the former top prospect.

This season, Arroyo is having a career year hitting .284 with two home runs, 14 RBIs in 34 games.

On Thursday night, Arroyo launched his first Fenway Park home run in front of fans that provided a dramatic moment to tie the game. The key home run tied the game 7-7 and Arroyo flipped his bat and pounded his chest that sent Red Sox Nation into a frenzy.

“That was my first Fenway homer in front of fans,” Arroyo said. “It was pretty awesome. I’m an emotional player when it comes to that kind of stuff. I love to win. I hit it, I saw it and at that point I knew it I was out, I kind of just blacked out a little bit. I was just excited.”

Arroyo’s play this season has allowed for manager Alex Cora to pencil him in at second base on a regular basis. The emergence of Arroyo has allowed Cora to shift Kiké Hernández to center field.

The 437-foot clutch home run from Arroyo gave Boston additional offense outside their top four hitters in the lineup. He would finish the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. If Arroyo continues to swing a consistent hot bat, the Red Sox maybe able to insert him into the leadoff spot.

“To come out here and avoid that sweep and get a W at home against a good Houston Astros team, what more could you ask for?” he said.
