Boston Red Sox: The Colorado Rockies a Perfect Trade Partner for Chaim Bloom?

The 2021 MLB Trade Deadline is roughly five weeks away and the Red Sox are expected to be active in their hunt to make it back to October.  The Red Sox are in first place and will play a pivotal three-game series against the second place Tampa Bay Rays.  Entering play on Tuesday night, the Red Sox have a half game lead over the Rays for first place in the American League East.

The Red Sox have one glaring hole in their lineup, and that is a need for a lead-off hitter.  Manager Alex Cora has primarily used Kiké Hernández out of the lead-off spot, but the 29-year-old utilityman has seen a resurgence out of the No. 7 spot in the line-up.

Boston is expected to continue to give Christian Arroyo a look at the top of the lineup.  This week’s series against Tampa Bay will be a good test for Arroyo.

Another area the Red Sox could look to upgrade is at first base, mainly because Bobby Dalbec has struggled at the plate.  Dalbec has started off sluggish at the plate, hitting a mere .219, but he his bat has shown signs of life over the last two weeks.

Over the last two weeks, Dalbec is hitting .342 with 13 hits, three home runs and eight RBIs in 38 at-bats.  After hovering the majority of the season above or around the Mendoza line, Dalbec is showing signs of life at the plate.

The 25-year-old slugger has choked up on his bat and is letting it rip from the plate.  He is also having fun, and with the team winning and in first place, he can try and put less pressure on himself.

“I’m just trying to ride the wave,” Dalbec said.  “Let go of things quicker.  Just not really put as much pressure on myself day-to-day, pitch-to-pitch.  So just trying to have more fun.  Have fun with it.  The team’s winning.  That’s all that matters.”

If Bloom feels that the Red Sox need an upgrade offensively at first base, they could look to the Rockies for some help.  The Rockies first baseman C.J. Cron is a candidate to be traded at the MLB Trade Deadline.  Offensively in the short-term, he would be an upgrade over Dalbec. However, staying the course with Dalbec ultimately makes more sense.

Fansided Rockies website RoxPile thinks Boston and Colorado are perfect dance partners for a potential trade.

The 31-year-old slugger is hitting .271 this season with nine home runs and 28 RBIs in 58 games.  His numbers are similar to Dalbec from a production standpoint, with the exception of his batting average.  Cron is hitting .60 points higher than Dalbec and he has struck out less than the Red Sox rookie.  Dalbec has whiffed 76 times this season versus Cron, who has gone down 52 times by way of the strikeout.

Colorado is in a position where they’ll look to add prospects within their system. Cron would likely cost Chaim Bloom at least two prospects out of his system. At this point, the Red Sox are expected to stick it out with Dalbec and see if he can put together a longer stretch of success at the plate.

Dalbec is making adjustments at the plate, and so are the pitchers and teams he's facing.

“Obviously, the league is making adjustments.  They’re pitching him differently,” Cora said.  “The ups and downs of a season.  He’s still a rookie and he’s still learning.  It’s hard to struggle.  At one point, it looked ugly to be honest with you.  And he knew it.  But he kept putting in work.  We made some adjustments as far as his routine.  He made some adjustments on his own.  Right now, he’s doing an amazing job.”

  1. how about getting mitch moreland back, gold glove 1st baseman, good leader, would be a mentor for dalbec, and i'm sure he'd be a cheaper pickup from the A's. plus he's loved by the boston fans.
