Boston Red Sox: Hunter Renfroe is One of Baseball’s Best Bargain’s at $3 Million

This winter, Chaim Bloom made an under the radar signing in outfielder Hunter Renfroe. Bloom signed the 29-year-old right fielder for $3 million.

When the Red Sox signed Renfroe, there was a portion of the fan base who bashed the signing. Renfroe was coming off a subpar season in 2020, granted it was the pandemic shortened season. In 42 games with the Rays, Renfroe hit .156 with eight home runs and 22 RBIs. The season prior, he hit .216 with the Padres but crushed a career high 33 home runs.

The power has always been there for Renfroe and Bloom recognized that. The low price tag attached to Renfroe gave the impression to fans the Red Sox we’re going cheap. However, the current ROI from Renfroe has paid massive dividends.

The veteran outfielder is having a great first year with Boston. He’s played in 69 games hitting .272 with 11 home runs and 41 RBIs.

Over the last two weeks, Renfroe has been on fire. The outfielder is hitting .341 with three home runs and 12 RBIs. During Monday night's game against the Royals, Renfroe displayed his power by hitting two home runs.

The two home runs helped power the Red Sox to their 26th comeback win this season Monday. He was also part of the Red Sox 27th comeback win on Tuesday night, too.

“This is a guy that, yeah, he had power, we envisioned that, but he’s becoming a good hitter, hanging in there against righties, going the other way, taking pitches when he has to,” said manager Alex Cora.

With the month of June winding down, it’s safe to say that Renfroe’s offense has replaced Andrew Benintendi’s bat in the lineup.

In addition to his offense, Renfroe is playing elite defense in right field.

“The last two months, he’s been playing All-Star caliber baseball,” manager Alex Cora said. “And we know what he can do defensively.

The way he’s playing, people need to start recognizing him as one of our best players. He’s been huge for us. We always talk about the four guys, but what he’s doing has been amazing the last two months,” said Cora.

One of the Red Sox best players was a bargain signing by Bloom this winter. Cora has referred to Renfroe as the American League’s best right fielder. The Rays saw first hand last week when Renfroe made a spectacular catch against them. He currently leads MLB in outfield assists with nine.

Renfroe will earn $3 million this season, which is an absolute steal for Bloom. It’s time to start to give Bloom credit for some of his great moves.
