Boston Red Sox: Nick Pivetta Struggles as Vladdy Jr. and the Blue Jays Smash Four Home Runs Off Him

What a difference 24 hours makes, last night Alex Verdugo and Christian Arroyo were the heroes in the Red Sox 6-5 win over the Blue Jays. The story on Saturday would not have the same outcome as Nick Pivetta was tagged for six runs off of six hits over five innings.

Pivetta gave up four home runs to the Blue Jays on Saturday including three in the fifth inning. Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. crushed a 385-foot home run in the first inning. Guerrero Jr.'s home run was his 20th of the season. After an impressive comeback win on Friday night, Boston would get their doors blown off Saturday losing 7-2 at Fenway Park.

Pivetta who was touched for four home runs gave up three in one inning to Cavan Biggio, Marcus Semien and Bo Bichette. The home run by Bichette was the farthest hit one of the day going 401-feet.

The horrendous fifth inning spelled the end for Pivetta who saw his ERA climb to 4.28 on the season. In addition, the Red Sox saw a 46 consecutive game streak in which Boston pitchers allowed one home run or less.

The Red Sox starters have struggled as of late and have allowed 35 earned runs in 37 ⅔ innings with an 8.36 ERA over the last eight games. Despite the pitching woes, the Red Sox are 5-3 over that eight game span.
“They’re a good group of guys. They hit mistakes. At the end of the day there’s still a lot of room to get ahead of those guys and do a really good job. They put some good swings on some balls. It’s not letting them get too high and thinking that they’re that great, you know?,” said Pivetta.

“We’re going to go out, we’re going to put two really good games at the end of this series and win this series 3-1 and we’re going to move forward from this and go to Atlanta. It’s one game at a time and it’s us against them.”

The Red Sox will look to rebound on Sunday and continue their series with the Blue Jays. Boston will have Martin Perez on the mound as he looks for his fifth win of the season.
