Boston Red Sox Prospect Nick Yorke is Having an Impressive Month of June

When the Red Sox drafted infielder Nick Yorke in the first round of the MLB Draft last season, it left many people scratching their heads.  The draft pick was somewhat surprising to most in the baseball world.  However, Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom saw something in Yorke and made him his first ever draft pick with Boston.

The 19-year-old prospect is with the Salem Red Sox this season and has been on fire for the month of June.  Yorke has a slash line of .354/.456/.523 over 79 plate appearances this month.  In addition, he has six stolen bases, ten runs scored and he hit his first career home run last week.

Yorke hit his first professional home run in a 3-2 victory over the Delmarva Shorebirds back on June 21.  The Salem second baseman went 2-for-5 in the victory with a run scored and a strikeout.

Last season, Yorke impressed a lot of people within the Red Sox organization with the way he handled himself at the team’s big league camp.  The Red Sox felt that Yorke was a first-round talent and he did nothing but impress last season.  Boston may have found a diamond in the rough in the first round due to the COVID-19 shortened MLB Draft.  There are many talent evaluators who believe that if baseball was played last season, Yorke could have been higher on teams' draft boards.

Yorke was unfazed by big league camp and conducted himself very professionally.  During the offseason, Yorke focused on conditioning and he lost 25 pounds.

“In Pawtucket and in [Instructional League], I wasn’t in the greatest shape,” Yorke acknowledged.  “Going into my first offseason, we made a goal to lose 10 to 15 pounds before I came back.  Just focusing on that, I came back and lost 25 ... just focusing on the nutrition piece and worrying about getting yourself right for the season and not worrying about anything.  You definitely put a lot more time into yourself and into your body.”

Red Sox manager Alex Cora was impressed with Yorke and his ability to play it cool at camp.

“I asked him, ‘Are you nervous’”, said Cora.  “He’s like ‘Nope’, I said ‘Ok good for you.’  I was probably more nervous for him, so that’s a good sign.”

What is a good sign is that Yorke is filled with confidence and that will be good as he excels through the Red Sox system.

“I have a lot of confidence in myself,” Yorke said.  “I believe I can hit off any pitcher there is.”
