Boston Red Sox: The Starters are Struggling, Cora and Players Adamant it’s Unrelated to Impending League Crackdown

The Red Sox starting pitching over the last nine games has been putrid.  They have allowed 40 earned runs in 39 innings with a 9.23 ERA.  Those numbers date back to last Saturday when the Red Sox played the Yankees the Bronx.

During the span of those nine games, Boston has fallen three games behind the red-hot Tampa Bay Rays for first place.

As the Red Sox pitching staff continues to struggle, there is a growing concern it’s related to the doctoring of the baseball scandal throughout baseball.

The Red Sox have been adamant that it’s not related and that the team is just scuffling.  “It has been a horrible week for us pitching-wise,” said Cora following the 18-4 blowout loss to the Blue Jays on Sunday.

Martin Pérez started the game Sunday and lasted only 1 ⅓ innings, giving up six hits and five earned runs.

“I’m not a cheater pitcher,” he said.  “I’ve been around for a long time and I don’t use that kind of stuff.  I just go out there and compete with what I’ve got that day.  I don’t put anything on my arm.  I don’t put anything on my glove.  Whoever did, that’s their problem.”

It’s easy to want to connect the Red Sox pitching woes to the MLB scandal.  The team and executives have reportedly had discussions with the players on illegal substances dating back to spring training in 2020.

“It’s something that has to get cleaned up across the game.  We’ve talked to the guys from spring training on.  We had another meeting last week.  They know what’s going on.  They know what the rules are and what they have to follow.  No, I don’t think it’s having any impact on us right now,” said Red Sox pitching coach Dave Bush.

The timing of the Red Sox pitching struggles comes at an inopportune time due to the league scandal.  Pérez and Cora are adamant it has nothing to do with sticky substances, but more so the fact the starters are unable to locate pitches.

“It’s not that we have not been pitching good for the last three or four days because of the sticky things,” he said.  “It’s because we’re not locating the pitches where we want it”, said Pérez.

Pitchers are always tinkering with their mechanics over the course of a season.  The teams struggles can not be solely connected to the doctored ball scandal within the game.

“I think, obviously the talk will be out there,” said  Cora. “Everybody will be looking at the scoreboard and who’s pitching.  If you give it up, you were using something your last start.  Before that, a lot of pitchers were giving it up.  I know the league is doing a good job with this stuff and they’re going to come down with a memo, but I don’t think struggling has to do with (sticky) stuff.  Those guys (the Blue Jays) are really good, too.  We have made a lot of pitches right down the middle lately and they’re taking advantage of them.”

The league has a sticky problem on their hands, pun and no-pun intended.  Until the Red Sox are connected to the scandal and it’s public knowledge they’ve benefited from illegal substances, fans and media will speculate as to why they’re struggling.
