Boston Red Sox: Sunday's 18-4 Loss to the Toronto Blue Jays Gave Off 2020 Season Vibes

It was Perez Day at Fenway Park as the Red Sox we’re looking to get back in the win column after Saturday’s loss to the Blue Jays. Instead, Martin Perez and the Red Sox looked a lot like the 2020 team that finished in last place. The Blue Jays crushed eight home runs and defeated the Red Sox 18-4.

Red Sox starter Martín Pérez was not sharp for his second straight start. He was not able to get past the third inning and gave up four runs, including three home runs. Manager Alex Cora replaced Pérez with Ryan Weber who was atrocious in his season debut. Weber went 5 ⅔ innings giving up 13 hits, 11 earned runs, two walks, seven strikeouts and four homers on 95 pitches. Nine of the 11 earned runs surrendered by Weber came via the long ball. Blue Jays' Teoscar Hernandez, Bo Bichette, Cavan Biggio and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. all smacked home runs off Weber.

Prior to his outing on Sunday, Weber went 88 ⅔ innings giving up 48 runs and 44 earned runs while posting a 4.73 ERA as a member of the Red Sox. The 30-year-old was just selected from Triple-A Worcester in case Boston would need a long reliever, which Cora did and then some. The right-hander took one for the team as the team was able to not deplete their bullpen.

The Red Sox starters haven’t fared well over the last nine games, they have allowed 40 earned runs in 39 innings with a 9.23 ERA. Those numbers date back to last Saturday when the Red Sox played the Yankees the Bronx.

During the post-game press conference, Cora was asked if there was a connection to his starters performance and the impending MLB crackdown on foreign substances. Cora said he doesn’t see any connection.

“It has been a horrible week for us pitching-wise,” said Cora following the game. Pérez also added during his post-game press conference that he has never used foreign substances while pitching and that his struggles the last two games are due to missed locations. “I’m not a cheating pitcher,” said Pérez.

“It’s one week, guys,” Pivetta said following Satuday’s loss to Toronto. “At the end of the day, we’ve held together really, really strong and put some really good starts in. There’s no room for panic here. There’s no room for making a big deal out of it. It’s baseball. It’s how it goes. It’s how you adjust to it and it’s how you move forward.”

With the loss on Sunday, the Red Sox are now three games behind the red hot first place Tampa Bay Rays. That is the furthest Boston has been out of first place since the start of the season.
