Boston Red Sox Will See Rays Top Prospect Wander Franco Make His Professional Debut This Week; Fans Anxiously Await Jarren Duran's Arrival

The Red Sox are off on Monday and are in first place, for now, in the American League East.  Boston will tangle with the Tampa Bay Rays for a three game series starting on Tuesday night.  The Red Sox are coming off a disappointing weekend in Kansas City, dropping two-of-three games to the third place Royals.

Despite the ebbs and flows that come with a long 162-game season, the Red Sox will be looking to create some distance between themselves and the Rays this week.  As the two teams set to face each other from Tropicana Field, the top prospect in baseball will likely make his debut against the Red Sox.

The Rays will be calling up infield prospect Wander Franco ahead of the series opener.  Franco, 20, has been ranked by Baseball America as the No. 1 prospect in Major League Baseball the last two seasons.

This season, Franco has been tearing it up with Triple-A Durham hitting .315 with seven home runs, 11 doubles, 35 RBIs and 30 runs scored over 39 games played.  Franco is a highly regarded prospect similar to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. who has been the American League leader in home runs this season.

While the Rays will feature one of their top prospects, the Red Sox remain bullish on calling up Jarren Duran.  The 24-year-old outfielder has been showcasing his power for the Worcester Red Sox this season.  He crushed his 12th home run of the season on Sunday, which was a walk-off home run.  Duran has a slash line .286/.379/.627 with 24 RBIs, six stolen bases, seven doubles and 26 runs scored.

Red Sox fans are anxiously awaiting for Duran’s name to be called up next.  The Red Sox will eventually add Duran to their big league roster, but Chaim Bloom will likely stay the course and wait.  Duran has been feasting on minor-league pitching and getting consistent at-bats will continue to be important for his development.

Duran has developed more raw power at the plate over the last year.  He credits that to listening to his father, who told him to lift more.  Duran followed his father’s advice and he has benefited from the time in the weight room.

“I came home to a garage full of weights and everything that’s been there for years,” said Duran to the Boston Globe.  “I am thankful I have a dad who loves to lift, stay in shape, it definitely helped me out [during the shutdown].”

The two would work out together while Duran was back home and the elder Duran acknowledged how much his son has grown psychically.  “I worked out with him, but the stuff he did was crazy. I couldn’t keep up with him.  He’s very strong and I’m not a spring chicken anymore,” said Octavio Duran, Jarren’s father.

Duran’s focus and goal is to be ready for when the Red Sox make the call and promote him to the big leagues.  The Rays calling up Franco will certainly push Red Sox fans curiosity regarding Duran.  Fans will need to be patient and let him develop both offensively and defensively with the Worcester Red Sox.  Duran will get his chance at some point, but the Red Sox are doing the right thing and letting him truly develop in their system.
