Connor Wong Becomes the Fourth Red Sox Player to Make his Major League Debut this Season

One of the three players who came over in the Mookie Betts trade made his major-league on Tuesday night.

Connor Wong was called up and activated before the game after catcher Kevin Plawecki landed on the injured list. Plawecki injured his hamstring during Sunday’s loss to the Royals. The backup catcher was removed in the fourth inning due to left hamstring tightness.

Wong will now serve as Christian Vazquez’s backup for the time being.

The 25-year-old catcher made his major-league for the Red Sox in the 11th inning. Wong was the automatic runner at second base to start the inning. He would ultimately score on Rafael Devers hit into right field.

“Wong did a good job with his secondary lead at second, his primary lead,” said Sox manager Alex Cora. “It’s not an easy spot: ‘Hey, go ahead, you’re the winning run so don’t get thrown out. Don’t get picked off. Don’t get doubled off.’ He did a good job and we’re very happy he’s with us.”

With his appearance in Tuesday night’s game, Wong became the fourth player to make his major-league debut with the Red Sox this season.

Wong was a former Dodgers third pick in 2017 and is currently ranked No. 16 in the Red Sox’ system. The catching prospect brings a mix of power, athleticism and versatility to the Red Sox. In addition to being able to catch, he has spent some time in the infield as well.

Back when the Red Sox acquired Wong, FanGraphs scouting report on said, “He has average raw power but lifts the ball.  His approach is an issue and I think it’ll prevent him from being a full-time player, but his ability to catch and play on the infield will make him a cool role player who gives Boston’s big league roster defensive flexibility.”

If Wong’s bat can translate as he moves up within the Red Sox system, and he can play other positions other than catcher, he will be an added bonus to the Betts trade. In addition to Wong, the Red Sox have catchers Jett Bandy and Chris Herrmann in their system. Wong is the only one of those three players on the 40-man roster.
