Boston Bruins: Taylor Hall "I See a Fit", Will He Return? What Player Could be a Fit If Hall Leaves?

The Boston Bruins are coming off a disappointing second-round exit in the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Wednesday. General manager Don Sweeney will have numerous roster decisions to make as the team embarks on NHL Free Agency.

One name that will garner the majority of the headlines will be Taylor Hall. The Bruins acquired Hall at the trade deadline from the Sabres with Curtis Lazar. Hall provided a spark to the Bruins second line with David Krejci.

The 29-year-old Hall scored eight goals in 16 regular season games with Boston. He would score three additional goals in 11 games in the playoffs. Hall and Bruins fans wanted a different end result in the playoffs but the veteran seems eager to have another postseason run with the Bruins.

“It was tough to go out like that. I think we have the makings of a really good team,” Hall told reporters Friday morning. “It’s frustrating — you don’t want to be here this early. But the experience for me was great, the city, the fans, the organization as a whole and the guys in the room. For me, it was a chance to play with some great players and great people and I really enjoyed that.”

Hall will have to make a decision on what it will take to remain in Boston.

“I see a fit,” Hall said of the B’s. “Hopefully they feel the same. We’ll let the dust settle on everything this year; I’m sure they have some other stuff going on and guys who have been here longer than me. But hopefully we can make this work. That is obviously my goal and hopefully we can make that happen.”

If the Bruins are unable to make that happen, who could be a viable replacement for Hall?

What about Johnny Gaudreau? The former Boston College standout and Calgary Flames left winger will be heading into the final year of his contract. Gaudreau is coming off a 19 goal season with 30 assists who could be traded if the Flames are looking to shake up their roster.

The 27-year-old left wing will carry a cap hit of $.6.75 million next season which could align with the amount of money Hall will be looking for from Boston. It’s uncertain as to what kind of return Gaudreau could command with an expiring contract. The Flames cannot afford to lose him for nothing following next season.

The Bruins could look to move Jake DeBrusk who is entering the final year of his two-year extension he signed prior to 2020. He will earn $3.675 million next season in Boston. Debrusk is coming off a disappointing season where he only scored five goals and had nine assists. Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy benched DeBrusk a few times this season to try and get the young players attention.

At the end of the day, we’re not quite getting out of Jake what we want,” said Cassidy back in March. “We just feel we’re not getting the effort required,” Cassidy added. “It’s not always about the scoresheet. It’s about being one of 20 guys helping you win, and sometimes it’s there, and sometimes it’s not. We’ve tried different messaging with the player and sometimes going upstairs and taking a look is not a bad way to go to put a different perspective on it. Maybe he’ll have a better appreciation for being in [the lineup] and then maybe educating yourself on what you see up top than you do in live action.”

The Bruins can not afford to trade tangible assets for Gaudreau to just walk following the season. Gaudreau has already experienced playing in Boston due to his time with Boston College. The Flames winger has already stated he would like to sign a longterm deal with Calgary.

The Bruins will likely have to commit $8 or $9 million for Gaudreau who is coming off a 99-point season three years ago. Boston will push to bring back Hall on a more team friendly deal heading into this season. Hall see’s Boston as a good fit and would like to remain with the team.

There will be a lot of questions surrounding the roster building of the Boston Bruins for next season and beyond. One of the first moves, Sweeney should look to resign Hall but if he can’t, Sweeney should give Calgary a call and check the availability of Gaudreau.

Cassidy’s decision to start a healthy Swayman could help extend the Bruins season.  There is the potential that the moment could be too big for the rookie goaltender.

The former University of Maine net minder is the clear future for the Bruins. The future may officially start on Wednesday night for Game 6.  Swayman could be the spark plug needed for a Bruins team on the brink of elimination.
