Red Sox Acquire the Final Two Players from the Kansas City Royals to Complete the Andrew Benintendi Trade

The Red Sox and Royals completed the Andrew Benintendi trade on Friday night.  Boston acquired right-handed pitching prospects Luis De La Rosa and Grant Gambrell.  According to Prospects1500, De La Rosa was ranked No. 27 and Gambrell No. 33 in the Royals system.

The Red Sox have now received all five players for Benintendi after also acquiring Mets outfield prospect Freddy Valdez.  Valdez was listed as the No. 14 prospect in the Mets system according to MLB Pipeline.

The 23-year-old Gambrell was selected by the Royals in the third round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Oregon State.  In five starts this season, Gambrell is 2-1 with a 4.37 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and opponents are hitting .190 with 18 strikeouts.

Listed at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, Gambrell's FanGraphs scouting report says, "At his best, Gambrell sits in the mid-90’s with a plus breaking ball and a tailing, mid-80’s changeup that he uses in some clever ways, including as a means to jam righties.  His stuff has been inconsistent and he missed considerable time with injury during college, which creates some relief risk. We’re talking about a pitcher who only worked about four innings per outing during his sophomore year, and struggled when the Royals asked him to work as a starter and blow way past his previous single-year innings total after they drafted him in 2019."

De La Rosa posted a 2.33 ERA, giving up 10 earned runs in 38 ⅔ innings during the Dominican Summer League in 2019.  His opponents hit .197 against him, he struck out 52 batters and had a 0.91 WHIP.

Baseball America wrote back in 2019 about De La Rosa, “He’s now reaching the low-90s, with loose, easy arm action and the projection for more velocity to come.  For someone without much experience on the mound, de la Rosa has shown surprising pitch ability, with a slider and an advanced changeup for his age.”

The two pitchers from Kansas City now completes the full Benintendi trade that was agreed upon earlier in the year.  The final trade reads as follows:

Red Sox get: OF Franchy Cordero (from KC), RHPs Luis De La Rosa and Grant Gambrell (from KC), RHP Josh Winckowski (from NYM), and OF Freddy Valdez (from NYM)

Royals get: OF Andrew Benintendi (from BOS)

Mets get: OF Khalil Lee (from BOS via KC)

With the trade officially in the books, fans and media can now debate the return of the trade now that  every player has been agreed upon.
