Red Sox Prospect Frank German Struggling with Double-A Portland

SHARE:

During the offseason, the Red Sox made a rare trade with the New York Yankees.  The two teams completed a deal that sent reliever Adam Ottavino and pitching prospect Frank German to Boston.

The Red Sox assumed Ottavino’s salary, which means they paid $8 million to buy a prospect.  Ottavino started off rough with the Red Sox but has since been better.

The veteran reliever earned his second save of the season against the Marlins this past weekend.  This season Ottavino has posted a 3.05 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, two saves, he’s blown three and is 2-2.

German, on the other hand, has struggled for the Portland Sea Dogs.  In his last start against Hartford, the young righty wasn’t sharp.  He only allowed one run over four innings until the fifth, where Hartford tagged him for seven runs.

He is averaging roughly three innings per start with an 8.47 ERA.  It’s expected he’ll get more time to work through his struggles as a starter.  German split time as a starter and reliever when he was in the Yankees system.

The 23-year-old ranks No. 29 in the Red Sox system according to MLB.com.  German offers good velocity on his fastball.  The fastball works out at 94-96 mph, and his four-seam fastball tops out at 98 mph.  In addition to the velocity on his fastball, he offers a changeup.  His changeup will fade as it approaches the plate and has some sink action to it.

It’s still too early to cast doubt on German because his sample size in the Red Sox system is small.  His promising fastball is intriguing, and the way that Chaim Bloom helped build bullpens with the Rays, German could find himself a home there.
