Red Sox Prospect Josh Winckowski Has Been Superb in Portland, The Remaining Pieces From the Benintendi Trade to be Announced Soon

Red Sox pitching prospect Josh Winckowski is off to a hot start with the Portland Sea Dogs.  One of the players from the Andrew Benintendi trade back in February earned his second win on Saturday night.

Winckowski earned the win over Hartford, giving up just one hit and no walks while striking out nine.  He is now 2-0 with a 1.33 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in five starts.  The 22-year-old prospect also has struck out 26 batters while limiting only nine walks.

The Red Sox have only acquired two players so far in the Benintendi trade.  Winckowski has been superb in the minors and shows promise and upside.

Franchy Cordero was the other player in the deal, and he has been demoted to Worcester.  After 34 games with Boston, Cordero struggled mightily, hitting .179 with one home run and nine RBI’s.  Last week the team demoted him to Worcester and added reliever Colten Brewer to the roster.

While with the WooSox, Cordero has looked good.  He is settling in the heart of the lineup and producing.  He is riding a seven-game hitting streak, which extends back his last three games with Bost.  Cordero has also hit a few massive home runs for Worcester since his demotion.

There should be some clarity as to the prospects coming back to Boston in the Benintendi trade.

According to the Kansas City’s Star Lynn Worthy, the deal will be completed “as soon as the next week or two.”  Mass Live’s Chris Cotillo reported that both the Mets and Royals have negotiated different timelines for the return in the Benintendi trade.

The prospect from the Mets is expected by June 4, according to Cotillo.  When Boston completed the three team trade, it was actually two separate deals.  The Red Sox acquired outfielder Khalil Lee and immediately flipped him to New York.  That deal landed them Winckowski and the other PTBNL.

The Mets will send a more highly-regarded player back to complete that deal.
