WooSox: Franchy Cordero Taking Grounders at First Base

SHARE:

Prior to Tuesday’s game for the Worcester Red Sox, outfielder Franchy Cordero was seen at first. The outfielder was taking ground balls from WooSox infield coach Bruce Crabbe.

The Red Sox value versatility on their roster, Cordero playing first base in the future could help him get back to Boston.

“Versatility is a plus for almost everyone,” chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said. “He started out as an infielder, so no harm in taking a look.”

Cordero who came over as one of the five players in the Andrew Benintendi deal has primarily been an outfielder. However, Cordero was a shortstop within the Padres system before being shifted to the outfield.

Since joining the WooSox, Cordero has flourished at the plate. In 26 games, he’s hitting .386 with six home runs and 10 doubles. The consistent at-bats have helped Cordero mightily at Triple-A.

The 26-year-old struggled with Boston prior to his demotion to Worcester. He hit a putrid .179 with 37 strikeouts in 102 plate appearances.

Cordero is a piece to the Red Sox future, it’s just a matter of where he fits into the puzzle. That could be at first base as the Red Sox search for offensive consistency from that position. Current first baseman Bobby Dalbec has struggled all season.

Dalbec is hitting .218 with 10 home runs and 34 RBIs. He’s played well at first base, but from an offensive perspective the team might want to upgrade.

The Red Sox want to give Cordero all the opportunities to be successful. He has unbelievable raw power and it’s been on display for the WooSox fans at Polar Park. If he can transition to first base as well and offer versatility within his skill set, Cordero might be back in Boston soon.
