Boston Celtics: Another Year, Another Myles Turner Trade Rumor

The Boston Celtics have been connected to Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner for the last few seasons.  It doesn’t feel like Celtics fans can go through the year without reading about Turner possibly coming to Boston.

Once again, the Celtics are interested in trading for Turner.  According to Evan Massey of NBA Analysis Network, the two teams have begun discussions for a trade.

“The Pacers and Celtics have indeed begun discussions about a potential Myles Turner trade,” reported Massey.  “It’s the third straight offseason the two teams have discussed such a deal, but this time it’s Brad Stevens making decisions instead of Danny Ainge.”

Turner has two years left on his four-year, $80 million deal, and he will make $18 million over the next two seasons.  The Pacers center will be able to test free agency as an unrestricted free agent in 2023.

Turner averaged 12.6 points and 6.5 rebounds over 47 games last season, but led the NBA with an outstanding 3.4 blocks per game.  The 25-year-old also shot 33.5 percent from 3-point range on a career-high 4.4 attempts per game.

Prior to the start of last season, there was speculation that the Celtics could have traded Gordon Hayward to the Pacers in a sign-and-trade to land Turner.  For whatever reason, that deal fell through and Hayward left for the Hornets.

If Boston is finally able to make a trade for Turner they would have landed a versatile center who is an elite rim protector.  He would instantly become a massive upgrade over Tristan Thompson who failed to make a major impact this season.

President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens is looking to make upgrades to his roster and Turner would be another step forward.  Turner would be the long-term option at center that Boston hasn’t had in a while.  If Stevens wants to make this deal it would certainly mean the end of Robert Williams time with the Celtics.

At some point the Celtics either need to make this deal and land Turner or just move on.  He is an intriguing young player that Stevens could insert into the lineup with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.  It’s time to get off the pot and decide if Turner is finally a viable option to bring to Boston.
