Boston Celtics' Jayson Tatum Reacts to Bradley Beal Trade Rumors

The Boston Celtics are a team looking to make upgrades to their roster after a disappointing season.  New President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens has already made one move to shake up his roster.

Last month, Stevens traded Kemba Walker, the 16th overall pick in the NBA draft and a 2025 protected second-round pick to the Thunder.  The Celtics acquired Al Horford and Moses Brown and a 2023 second-round pick.

The trade was Stevens first move in revamping the Celtics roster.  In the short-term, Horford and Brown don’t make the Celtics better on paper, however, they gained some financial flexibility.  That flexibility could be used to bring in another superstar to play along side Jayson Tatum.

The Celtics’ star is currently in Tokyo for the Olympic Games playing for Team USA. Tatum would have been playing along side childhood friend and Wizards star Bradley Beal. The Wizards star is missing the Tokyo games due to COVID.

It was initially assumed that while Tatum and Beal are together in Tokyo that the Celtics star will be trying to recruit his friend to come to Boston. However COVID had other plans for the Wizards guard.

The problem with Beal is he still is under contract with the Wizards.  In the NBA, that generally doesn’t mean much as the players currently control who will play for their teams.

If the Celtics want to bring Beal to Boston, they will have to trade for him this season.  According to Bleacher Report, Beal is expected to ask for a trade before the 2021 NBA draft.

"He knows he has to make a decision before the draft," said the Bleacher Report article on Beal.

Beal has not publicly stated he wants out of Washington.  If Beal is to ask the Wizards for a trade, the Celtics would be a logical landing spot for the shooting guard.

To help fuel the trade rumors surrounding Beal, Tatum liked and posted an emoji on the Instagram post from the username Famouslos32.  The IG post was a video about Beal possibly being traded to the Warriors.  Fans and media saw Tatum like the post and it sparked a frenzy regarding the possibility surrounding Beal.

Celtics fans want to see the team bring in another player to play alongside Tatum.  However, fans may need to temper their expectations regarding Beal until he becomes a free agent.  If the Celtics were to swing a deal for Beal, they would likely have to include Jaylen Brown in the deal.  It’s unclear whether Stevens wants to trade Brown.

The Warriors could be the likely landing spot to acquire Beal.  The Bleacher Report article theorizes that the Warriors could trade the No. 7 and 14 picks in the draft to help land the superstar.

Whatever ultimately happens this offseason, Green Teamers will be monitoring the rumors closely.  If the Celtics try and land Beal a year early, Stevens would have begun to usher in a new phase of Celtics teams.  It’s unlikely that will happen, but Stevens could try and make a huge splash.
