Boston Red Sox: Christian Arroyo Taking Grounders at First Base Prior to the Start of the Yankees Series

With the promotion of Jarren Duran to the major-league club, Alex Cora will have to do some shuffling around with his defense. It’s expected that Kiké Hernandez will be shifting back to second base, Alex Verdugo will man center field and Duran will play left field.

Hernandez moving back to the infield means that Christian Arroyo will need a new spot in the infield. The Red Sox will look at experimenting with Arroyo at first base to keep his bat in the lineup.

Prior to Thursday night's game against the Yankees, The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey tweeted a picture of Arroyo and Red Sox coach Ramon Vazquez fielding grounders at first base.

By getting Arroyo reps at first base, it gives Cora and Chaim Bloom another internal option to possibly platoon with Bobby Dalbec.

The 26-year-old Dalbec has had a down year offensively while playing solid defense at first. In 72 games this season, Dalbec is hitting .219 with 10 home runs and has 36 RBIs. Despite the home run total his slash line has been putrid at .264/.409/.673.

Those numbers are part of the reason Arroyo is getting reps at first. If Arroyo can stick and play first, the Red Sox should not have to address that position at the trade deadline. Cora has shown patience with Dalbec all season in the attempts for him to get on track. However as the season moves forward the club will need a reliable offensive option.

Arroyo has only played second base and short stop this season. The majority of the time in the infield has come at second base. The move to try out Arroyo at first base could continue to phase out Michael Chavis. He’s currently on the major-league roster due to Danny Santana being placed on the injured list.

I’m 21 games this season, Chavis is only hitting .203 with the Red Sox. As the Red Sox get closer to the trade deadline and Santana and Marwin Gonzalez get healthy, Chavis could be traded.

The Red Sox will begin a four game series with the Yankees on Thursday night from the Bronx.
