Boston Red Sox Could Target University of Miami Catcher Adrian Del Castillo at No. 40

The Red Sox will look to follow up on their selection of Marcelo Mayer with the 40th overall pick in the MLB Draft on Monday.  Boston landed arguably the best prospect in the draft in Mayer.  The 18-year-old provides tremendous upside and he will quickly slot himself as a top-five prospect in the Red Sox system.

With the second round getting underway one name to keep an eye on at No. 40 is Miami catcher Adrian del Castillo.

The Miami catcher came into this year as a potential top-10 pick in the first round.  Instead, he has slid into the second round and Boston could be primed to select him.

After a lackluster season his stock dropped.  Despite hitting .275/.380/.395 with 17 extra-base hits in 237 plate appearances, Del Castillo is one of the best hitters in the draft.

Del Castillo showed power his freshman year hitting 12 home runs.  His smooth left-handed swing is led by his quick wrists and a short follow-through with the barrel of the bat.  Some scouts have reported Del Castillo could struggle transitioning from a metal bat to a wooden one.  However, the overall mechanics for Del Castillo are there and he has tremendous offensive upside.

According to The Athletic’s Keith Law, Del Castillo is “adequate at best behind the plate”.  He expects that Del Castillo could move to first base due to his bat.  Despite having “adequate” skills behind the dish doesn’t mean he’ll be a poor big league catcher.  Teams within the league are split on Del Castillo’s chances to be a catcher at the big league level.

The Red Sox have a need for additional catching depth within the system.  Christian Vazquez is 30-years-old and is eligible to become a free agent after 2022 season.  Boston currently has prospects Ronaldo Hernandez and Connor Wong as potential future replacements.  Wong doesn’t project as a future everyday starting catcher.

If the Red Sox draft Del Castillo, Chaim Bloom would be adding another high upside bat.  The 21-year-old catcher has drawn comps to White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal and Nationals slugger Kyle Schwarber.

The Nationals slugger came up as a catcher with the Cubs,  but transitioned to first base and the outfield.  Both are left-handed hitting catchers, however Schwarber offers more power upside.

The former Hurricane could develop nicely in the Boston system while Vazquez is still with the Red Sox.  Bloom is looking to stash more talent within the system and Del Castillo would be another huge add to the organization.
