Boston Red Sox Expected to be at Cole Hamels Workout

The first place Boston Red Sox will resume the second half of the season on Thursday. After a very successful and unexpected first half of the season, the Red Sox are focused on getting into the postseason.

We’re a few weeks away from the MLB trade deadline on July 30. Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom is expected to be active and try and upgrade portions of his roster. But prior to the deadline the Red Sox will get a look at a veteran left-handed arm.

Cole Hamels will have a workout on Friday for teams in Texas. According to WEEI’s Rob Bradford, the Red Sox are expected to be in attendance.

The 37-year-old pitched only 3 1/3 innings last season with the Braves due to a shoulder injury.

If he’s healthy, Hamels could provide considerable depth for the rotation. The Red Sox are going to be getting another left-hander back around the time of the trade deadline in Chris Sale.

However Hamels would be an intriguing option for the Red Sox. The former ace has spent months rehabbing for his opportunity to come back to the big leagues.

There’s a potential that in the second-half of the season teams will become very protective of their pitchers. Teams could place pitching on phantom IL stints to keep their arms fresh for the postseason.

The 15-year veteran could provide innings in the event Garrett Richards continues to struggle. It’s unlikely that Hamels will sign with a team only to be placed into the bullpen. Richards had been inconsistent all season long, he could be a bullpen candidate at some point.

The issue will be adding him to the 40-man roster. The Red Sox could create a spot for Hamels and DFA Austin Brice who’s really struggled with Boston. It’s expected that any other bubble 40-man player could be traded at the deadline.
