Boston Red Sox: Fan Hits Alex Verdugo in the Back with a Baseball in an Embarrassing Moment at Yankee Stadium

Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo was hit in the back by a baseball thrown by a fan from the left field stands on Saturday night. The moment led to a wild exchange in left field between a fired up Verdugo and fans in the stands.

The game came to a halt in the sixth inning following this situation. An irate Verdugo had to be pulled off the field following the interaction. Red Sox manager Alex Cora would pull his team off the field.

The umpires and security were quickly able to identify the fan who threw the ball at Verdugo. While all this was going on, the rain continued to pour down on Yankee Stadium.

The Red Sox and The Yankees were tied in the sixth prior to the bedlam ensuing. Once the umpires and security has control of the situation, play would resume in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Once play resumed, Yankees hitters Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres would hit back-to-back home runs to give the Bronx Bombers a 3-1 lead.

During the rain delay, Ken Rosenthal said that Verdugo was hit in the back with a baseball. Rosenthal said he did not see him get hit with the baseball but reporter Brendan Kuty confirmed the Verdugo incident.

Following the game, Cora commented on the Verdugo situation saying, "I know what I did in '17... I disrespected the game. But one thing I learned last year is that this is just a game. It's a game. It's not life and death.

The fact that people come to the ballpark and throw a baseball at a player... I was in shock that happened."

Cora also added why he took his players off the field following the crazy moment, "It seems like nobody was listening to me." Cora also stated he told the umpires he needed his team to collect their thoughts and relax.

He also added that he needed to protect and calm down Verdugo, "What if he jumps the fence? What if he goes up there and attacks someone?"

Verdugo commented as well after the game saying, "A fan threw a ball at me, hit me in my back. It don't sit right with me."

The incident was finally settled and the fan was found who allegedly threw the baseball. The game would later be called following the rain delay and the Yankees would go on to win 3-1.

  1. I don't blame Verdugo for being mad.
I hooe the ban that person forever from the patk.
I know that won't though because it was a RED SOX player.
I just know ee eould have won, had the game not been called.
A game that should have been postponed in the first place
