Boston Red Sox Go From Being No-Hit to Winning in Dramatic Fashion Over the Yankees

The 2021 Boston Red Sox can never be counted out in a game this season. On Sunday, the Red Sox sent the Fenway Faithful home in euphoria with their biggest comeback win of the season over the Yankees.

The Red Sox were facing Yankees starter Domingo Germán who was looking for his fifth win of the season. Germán was dominant all game, no-htting the Red Sox offense through eight innings. However, the never say die Red Sox’ bats woke up in the eighth inning and they never looked back.

Alex Verdugo would lead off the eight with a double that would break up Germán’s no-hit bid. The Verdugo double would be the beginning of the Red Sox comeback against their most hated rivals.

Following the Verdugo double, Yankees skipper Aaron Boone went to his bullpen and the wheels completely came off the wagon. Yankees Jonathan Loaisiga allowed an RBI double to Hunter Renfroe and then catcher Christian Vazquez got in on the action and knocked in the Red Sox outfielder with an RBI single.

Franchy Cordero helped the cause with a single and then the hottest hitter in the Red Sox lineup and new Yankee killer Kiké Hernández doubled bringing Boston within a run.

Boone would go back to his bullpen, this time calling on left-hander Zack Britton. Pinch-hitter Kevin Plawecki hit the ball on the ground in the infield scoring a run. The fielder’s choice by Plawecki would go on to tie the game 4-4.

Hernández then scored the go-ahead run on Xander Bogaerts’ RBI sac fly to right field. The score would hold up in the ninth as all-star closer Matt Barnes would earn the save in the ninth. This was Barnes 21st save on the season.

The huge comeback win for the Red Sox comes less than 24 hours from the Yankees ripping the hearts out of fans on Saturday night. With the win, the Red Sox would also gain a game back in the AL East over the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays lost to the Indians on Sunday 3-2.

Boston will open a four-game series against the Blue Jays beginning on Monday night from Fenway Park. Righty Nick Pivetta will be looking for his ninth win of the season against Toronto.
