Boston Red Sox Winning Streak Snapped, Matt Andriese Fails in Extra Innings

The Red Sox and Athletics traded jabs offensively at each other all night. The two teams offenses fought back and forth until the Red Sox took a two-run lead heading into the 12 inning.

With the bullpen depleted and Matt Barnes and Garrett Whitlock getting the day off manager Alex Cora was left with Matt Andriese.

The veteran right-hander hasn’t been sharp this season. Coming into Saturday’s game, Andriese has pitched in 24 games, with a 2-2 record and a putrid 5.25 ERA.

As the last man standing in the bullpen, Andriese would come out to pitch the 12th inning. With a 6-4 lead in the bottom half of the inning, Andriese would try and earn his second save of the season.

However, it was not meant to be.

Andriese would allow back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. The second single by Seth Brown would plate the first run of the inning and bring the A’s within a run.

Brown had a great game for the A’s going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Then old friend Jed Lowrie tied the game with an RBI double.

The A’s would end the Red Sox winning streak end at eight games after Tony Kemp hit a deep fly ball over the heads of J.D. Martinez and Kik√© Hernandez.

"It was a crazy game. If you guys want, we can go through every play... but it was a crazy game and they ended up winning,” said Cora following the game.

Andriese saw his ERA rise to 5.70 on the season and many fans on social media have called for his release. It’s unlikely the Red Sox move on from Andriese based off his $2.1 million salary and he does have a team option for next season.

In addition, Andriese was one of the pitchers who helped mentor Garrett Whitlock during Spring Training. The two worked together in the Spring and helped Whitlock learn a changeup.

“In spring training, him being a Rule 5 guy, you're soaking it all in," Andriese told  "Trying to learn.  Trying to get your feet wet.  Trying to make the team.  I noticed from Day 1 his stuff was really good.  I started playing catch with him probably two or three times every five days.  We kind of had similar schedules, so I started playing catch with him and I was just talking to him about his changeup.”

Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom has some roster decisions to make over the coming weeks. The Red Sox are a team that’s destined for October. He will need to find reliable arms that will get the job done. On Saturday night, Andriese failed when his team needed him most.

The Red Sox will look to win the series on Sunday with Nick Pivetta taking the mound for Boston. He will be looking for his seventh win of the season
