This week if you are a New England sports fan, there has been no shortage of sports news.  The Red Sox and Bruins have dominated the news with the trade deadline and the start of NHL free agency.

Celtics new President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens has decided that he wanted to get in on the fun too.  The Celtics made two trades on Friday that had fans excited.

Boston acquired point guard Kris Dunn, center Bruno Fernando and a 2023 second-round pick from the Hawks.  The Celtics sent Tristan Thompson to the Sacramento Kings and the Hawks acquired point guard Delon Wright.

Thompson spent only one season with the Celtics after joining the team as a free agent prior to the start of the 2020-21 season.  The big man started 43 of the 54 games he played in for Boston.  He scored 7.6 points per game and grabbed 8.1 rebounds per game.

Dunn will join the Celtics after averaging 8.2 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game with the Hawks.  The Celtics were able to fit him on the roster by using the Ones banter trade exception they had.  Stevens was also able to generate a $9.2 million trade exception from Thompson.

According to Adam Himmelsbach, the Celtics could flip Dunn in another deal.

Following the three-way trade Stevens followed that up by landing shooting guard Josh Richardson from the Dallas Mavericks.  The 27-year-old averaged 12.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists per game last season.  He will fit onto the roster after the C’s use the remainder of the Gordon Hayward trade exception they needed to use.

Boston will send newly acquired center Moses Brown to the Mavericks in the deal.

With the trade, the Celtics have 13 players with fully guaranteed contracts for next season.  In addition, they are $5 million under the projected luxury tax line of $136.6 million for next season.
