Excitement Grew in Red Sox Draft War Room Prior to Selecting Marcelo Mayer

The Red Sox made their long awaited No. 4 pick in the 2021 MLB Draft.  The club selected Eastlake High School short stop Marcelo Mayer.  The projected potential first overall selection slid to the Red Sox after Henry Davis, Jack Leiter and Jackson Jobe all went one through three.

While there maybe disappointment within the Red Sox fan base for not landing Leiter, Mayer is a very good consolation prize.

Red Sox amateur scouting director Paul Toboni spoke highly of his clubs newest prospect.  The Red Sox didn’t expect Mayer to fall to them.

"I think this outcome is one that everybody's really excited about,” said Toboni.

The Red Sox war room was certainly excited. As the Tigers were on the clock, word was beginning to spread that Jobe was going third.  Once that was a reality, the Red Sox were ready to take Mayer.

“It’s funny, there was like a slow trickle of excitement that worked around the room where scouts were getting notifications probably from friends or whoever it might be.  It was cool to see, because there was genuine excitement on everyone’s face,” said Toboni.

Mayer is only 18-years-old and will spend time in the Red Sox system.  Toboni thinks the young infielder will stick at shortstop.  He also spoke highly of the “purity” in which Mayer plays.

Toboni identifies Corey Seager and Brandon Crawford as comps to Mayer.  Offensively he projects like Seager and defensively like the veteran Crawford.

As the young prospect develops and adds strength and size, he should develop as a major-league short stop.

The Red Sox have just added another top prospect to their system.  A system that is being revamped by Bloom with 19 more rounds too go in the MLB Draft.
