Rays Land Nelson Cruz, Trade Rich Hill, Red Sox Are Still Very Quiet

The Tampa Bay Rays made a huge splash leading up to the the MLB trade deadline.  The Rays acquired Twins designated hitter Nelson Cruz and a prospect for two minor-leaguers.

Tampa Bay will acquire one of the games biggest sluggers in an attempt to solidify their lineup.  Cruz will bring his .294 batting average, 19 home runs and 50 RBIs to Tropicana Field.

"It's very exciting,'' said Cash.

"We're a good team and we know we just got better by adding Nelson Cruz, one of the hottest bats out there.  His presence.  His leadership.  I've known him for a long time now, and you never hear anyone say a negative thing about him, so we're adding a high-quality hitter and a high-quality person,” added Cash.

The Rays also traded lefty Rich Hill to the Mets for reliever Tommy Hunter and catching prospect Matt Dyer.

Hill this season is 6-4 in 19 starts with a 3.19 ERA with the Rays.  He will provide much needed depth to the Mets rotation.  With the Rays trading Hill, they could be in the market for an upgrade in their rotation.

With the Rays landing Cruz and trading Hill, all is quiet on the  Red Sox front.  Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom is expected to be active before next Friday’s deadline.

The Red Sox are in need of some roster tweaking as they focus on getting into the postseason.  Bloom could look to upgrade first base due to Bobby Dalbec’s struggles at the plate.

An option for the Red Sox is Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo.  The veteran first baseman is expected to be moved before the deadline.

Red Sox ace Chris Sale will be back with the club soon.  He continues to rehab from Tommy John surgery.  Despite knocking on the door to being called up, Boston could use an additional arm.

Garrett Richards has been inconsistent all season and as of right now can’t be relied on in October.  In his last five starts, Richards is 2-1 with a 7.70 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP.

Richards putrid numbers come as he is trying to reinvent himself on the mound after not being able to use a sticky substance.

The Red Sox could look at add a mid-rotation type of arm.  Fans should not be concerned over the cost of getting another starter.  The Red Sox will need to start moving some of their mid-tier prospects for a rotation upgrade.

Bloom is expected to be checking in on numerous players.  There have been rumors that other teams have called the Red Sox more than the Red Sox have made calls.

Rizzo is an upgrade at first, if they swing a deal with the Cubs the Red Sox could look to add Alec Mills in that deal too.  If not, Rangers Ian Kennedy could be another piece for a surprisingly good bullpen.

The clock is ticking and Bloom is quietly waiting to strike.
