Red Sox Bullpen Struggled Against the Yankees

The Red Sox bullpen seemed off this past weekend in their series against the Yankees. Boston would get punched in the mouth by New York, losing two-of-three games.

The Red Sox would take the first game of the series. Eduardo Rodriguez looked sharp during game one as he shut down the Yankees over 5 ⅔ scoreless innings, striking out eight batters.

The freshly shaven Rodriguez turned the game over to Tanner Houck, who was sharp. The 25-year-old would toss three scoreless innings surrendering one hit. He would earn his first career big league save.

The next two games were a completely different story. Boston’s bullpen wasn’t sharp whatsoever against the Bronx Bombers. During the rain soaked matchup, Hirokazu Sawamura coughed up back-to-back gopher balls to Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres. The Yankees would go on to win the game 3–1.

On Sunday night, the Red Sox had their doors blown off the barn. The Yankees pounded out nine runs off eight hits. The bullpen was responsible for giving up six runs.

Darwinzon Hernandez was tagged for four runs off two hits and he walked two. The Red Sox were only down 3-0 when the lefty came in to pitch, but when he came in is when the wheels came off.

Brett Gardner started the inning off with a base hit, bringing Rougned Odor to the plate. Odor would take a hanging slider deep into the seats in right giving New York a 5-0 lead. It didn’t get better from there for Hernandez.

The lefty walked each of the next two batters he faced before being pulled without recording a single out. Manager Alex Cora would call upon Brandon Workman.

The veteran right-handed couldn’t find the plate and walked three batters. Workman would walk in a run giving the Yankees a 6-0 lead. New York would later extend their league to seven runs.

The five walks allowed by Hernandez and Workman in the inning were the most sense a 2014 contest against the Yankees, per the ESPN broadcast.

Yacksel RĂos would come on for the Red Sox in the eighth and he was pitiful. He would issue a leadoff walk and then former Red Sox Ryan LaMarre would crush a two-run home run.

The Yankees would go on to beat the Red Sox 9-1 and they would win the series. The bullpen wasn’t sharp this weekend. With the trade deadline looming in 11 days, Chaim Bloom should look to add more arms for the long stretch run
