Red Sox Trade Rumors: Should Chaim Bloom Make a Run at Braves’ Charlie Morton?

The MLB Trade Deadline is on July 30 and the Red Sox are expected to be aggressive buyers. Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom will look at some upgrades to the roster. The team could potentially use another arm for the rotation, depth for the bullpen and another stick off the bench.

Boston is expected to get back ace left-hander Chris Sale around the same time of the trade deadline. Despite adding Sale into the mix, the Red Sox should explore additional upgrades to their rotation.

One name to keep an eye on over the next few weeks is Atlanta Braves veteran Charlie Morton.

The Braves are currently in third place and four games behind in the NL East. After losing Ronald Acuña Jr. for the season with an ACL injury the Braves could become active.

This season Morton is having a fine season with Atlanta. The 37-year-old righty is 8-3 with a 3.64 ERA over 18 starts. During the month of June, he was 3-1 over 29.1 innings pitched with a 2.73 ERA and struck out 33 batters.

The Red Sox could immediately strengthen their rotation by adding Morton. It’s no secret that Garrett Richards has struggled this season. Richards pitched well in his last start but he is far from being fixed. The Red Sox have some time before the trade deadline before making a decision on Richards. However if the Red Sox were to acquire Morton, Richards would undoubtedly be the odd man out and head to the bullpen.

The idea of adding Morton has been something Bloom has been interested in dating back to this past offseason. Morton was not brought back by the Rays following their World Series run. The veteran became a free agent and was pursued by many teams, including the Red Sox.

According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, the Red Sox made a “competitive offer” to Morton before he signed with Atlanta. Cotillo reported that the Tampa Bay Rays were the runner-ups to re-sign Morton if he passed on Atlanta, but that Boston was "not far behind."

Morton opted for Atlanta to be close to his family’s home in Florida.

If the Red Sox look to acquire Morton, he would likely be for this year only. Morton is 37 and a free agent at the end of the season. There has been retirement rumors surrounding Morton the last couple of seasons. With Morton being a rental the price will still likely be high.

The Red Sox have prospects within their system and could facilitate adding Morton. Upgrading the rotation with Morton and Sale would be a big step in trying to separate from the pack in the AL East.
