Report: Boston Celtics and Pelicans Have Discussed a Marcus Smart Trade

The NBA rumors are going to be swirling leading up to the NBA Draft on Thursday.  The Boston Celtics currently do not own a first round pick after trading the draft pick to Oklahoma City.  However, the Celtics could potentially be trading back into the first round.

According to Brandon “Scoops B” Robinson of Bally Sports, the Celtics and Pelicans have discussed a trade that would send Marcus Smart and a future draft pick to New Orleans.  Boston would acquire Eric Bledsoe and the No. 10 overall selection.

The report has indicated the Pelicans are motivated to move on from Bledsoe, who is set to earn $18.125 million this year and $19.375 million next season.

Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens could make this deal to land the No. 10 pick but only to use it as an asset to flip to the Washington Wizards for Bradley Beal.

Bleacher Report reported that Beal could tell the Wizards he would like to be traded.  The Boston Celtics are a logical landing spot for Beal due to his relationship with longtime friend Jayson Tatum.

This week, Tatum reacted with an shamrock emoji on social media about potential trade speculation regarding Beal.  The IG post was a video about Beal possibly being traded to the Warriors.  Fans and media saw Tatum like the post and it sparked a frenzy regarding the possibility surrounding Beal.

If Stevens wants to land Beal he will need to be creative in his approach to land the superstar.

The Celtics are thin on assets, former president of basketball operations Danny Ainge left the cupboards bare. Stevens one and only true asset is Jaylen Brown but it seems the Celtics would prefer to add a third star with him and Tatum.

Boston could be taking on other contracts and trying to secure other picks to offset a deal not involving Brown, like trading Smart.  The former first-round pick has be subject of trade rumors this offseason, but reports have stated that Stevens wants to keep Smart.  That could just be lip service on Stevens part to not show his hand surrounding any potential trade.

The Celtics are going to be connected to names this offseason and the makeup of the roster could look dramatically different than last season.  If Stevens has a realistic shot at landing Beal, he will explore all avenues to try and make a trade happen.

  1. How does trading Brown to acquire Beal move the ball for the Celtics? They STILL won’t have the vaunted Big Three! Just a couple of guys who are friends! That doesn’t sound like a blueprint for potential Championship success to me.
