Boston Red Sox: Alex Verdugo and Bobby Dalbec Combined for Six Hits on Sale Day

All eyes were on Chris Sale on Saturday as the lefty returned to the mound almost two years since his last start.  Sale was impressive in his first start back following Tommy John surgery.

Sale did not disappoint the Fenway Faithful.  In his first start back, he was vintage Sale.  The tall lefty threw five innings while striking out eight Orioles batters.

The ace left-hander wasn’t the only one impressive on Saturday.  Alex Verdugo and Bobby Dalbec combined for six hits in the rout of the Orioles.

Verdugo is hitting .444 since returning from paternity leave this week.  The 25-year-old welcomed a baby boy to the world earlier in the week.  On Saturday, Verdugo had four hits and scored three runs.

Verdugo matched career highs with four hits, his first time achieving that mark as a member of the Red Sox.  He has done that two other times back in 2019 with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He also scored three runs in game for the first time as a member of the Red Sox.  He also did that three times in 2019 with the Dodgers.

Dalbec hit two home runs on Sale Day.  The 26-year-old slugger is swinging a hot bat as of late.  Over the last seven days, Dalbec is hitting .600 at the dish.  He’s slugged three home runs while knocking on 12 RBIs.

Dalbec has nine hits in 15 at-bats and his slash line has been impressive.  He is slashing .667/1.467/2.133 over that seven day stretch.  The power hitting first base man has been inconsistent this season, but Saturday might have been his best game all season.

“I do believe today was his best game overall,” manager Alex Cora said following the game.  “It’s one of those that, we know that our guys on top of the lineup, they’re going to do the job but we need other guys to contribute.”

The Red Sox have been patient with Dalbec all season.  Cora and the front office have been sticking with him despite his struggles.  At times, Dalbec looked like a candidate to be sent to Worcester.

Dalbec was asked following the game about his struggles.  “I haven’t really thought about that [being demoted to Worcester],” he said.  “They put the lineup out there that they think is going to win ballgames.  If I’m in it, awesome.  If I’m not, it’s all good.  We’re trying to win games.  It’s not about me.”

The Red Sox will go for the three game sweep on Sunday over the Orioles.  Eduardo Rodriguez takes the mound in search of his ninth win of the season.
