Boston Red Sox: Nick Pivetta Pitches a Gem Over Six Innings, the Offense Continues to Struggle

The Red Sox came into Saturday losers of eight of their last 10 games. The starting pitching staff entered the day with a 8.40 ERA over their last 11 starts. On top of that the offense has been anemic at the plate.

Nick Pivetta would take the bump this afternoon and look to put an end to the Red Sox skid. Pivetta would dominate the Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon.

The right-hander only allowed one hit to the Blue Jays, Corey Dickerson would single with two outs in the fifth inning. Pivetta would throw six scoreless innings, walked one and struck out five.

Despite how good Pivetta was on the mound for Boston, his offense was not able to help him out. The Red Sox offense struggled mightily against Blue Jays lefty Robbie Ray. The Blue Jays starter also went six innings, allowing only two hits, two walks and struck out five.

The Red Sox offense had opportunities to get to Ray, Kiké Hernández led off the game with a walk but Boston couldn’t capitalize. In the fifth inning, Kevin Plawecki singled with one out. Plawecki would get the Sox first hit of the game. However, Christian Vázquez would ground into a double play to end the inning.

The Red Sox had other opportunities to try and score off Ray. In the sixth inning with Bobby Dalbec and Jonathan Araúz reached on base with no one out. But Hernández went down looking, Alex Verdugo grounded out and Xander Bogaerts fouled out.

The Red Sox were not ever able to capatilze when they had runners on the base paths and the Jays would make them pay in the bottom of the seventh.

All-Star closer Matt Barnes would come in the seventh inning and would give up a first-pitch home run to Marcus Semien. The Blue Jays would walk-it off taking the second game of their series against the Red Sox.

The Red Sox offense needs to make adjustments and fast to begin to right the ship. Manager Alex Cora needs to figure out a way to get through to his players and get them focused again on winning.

The Sox will play the second game of their doubleheader on Saturday night. Tanner Houck will take the mound and look to help pace the Red Sox to a win and end this losing streak.
