Boston Red Sox Sign Veteran Lefty Alex Claudio

The Red Sox continue to make some moves to add depth with Worcester, this time by adding left-hander Alex Claudio to a minor-league deal. Claudio spent time with the Angels this season before being designated for assignment on July 25.

The move comes on the heels of the Red Sox releasing right-hander Marcus Walden. The right-hander spent the entire year with Worcester pitching in 27 games, tossing 42 ⅔ innings but owned a 4.01 ERA with 40 strikeouts and walking 19 batters.

Claudio comes to the Sox organization with some ugly stats. He made 41 appearances with the Angels this season and would post a 5.51 ERA and striking out 30 batters in 32 ⅔ innings.

The 29-year-old lefty comes to the Red Sox organization after spending parts of eight seasons with the Rangers, Brewers and Angels. Over those eight seasons he owns a 3.63 career ERA and has been very successful against lefties. Claudio has held lefties to a .212 career batting average and a .596 OPS.

The move gives the Red Sox another left-handed option within their upper-levels of the minor leagues. Boston has Darwinzon Hernandez who is currently on the injured list, Josh Taylor who is having a stellar season and newly acquired Austin Davis. Claudio gives the Red Sox another option who can work on somethings with Worcester prior to the rosters expanding in September.

Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom has been adding some castoffs from other clubs after the trade deadline. Bloom acquired outfielder Delino DeShields from the Rangers last week. Teams can trade players who are not on their 40-man roster following the trade deadline.

The Red Sox also added right-hander Jose De Leon who signed as a free agent. The addition of Claudio is a depth move for the Red Sox and they will hope they can work out any issues he might be having to get him right incase they need him. Claudio is a low-risk, high-reward type of addition for Bloom, hopefully it is the latter.
